DVD/CD player on the fritz. Looks like a mechanical problem. Anyone got any recommendations?
I know, why repair it when I can throw it away and buy three new ones made in the same impoverished nation. But still, it's principle.

Yep - take it apart and figure out what's broke. I've fixed three (Sony) CD/DVD players that way.
Good. Come over and figure out what's wrong with my Bose Wave radio. It won't go.
I'm guessing that the lack of moving parts will make it unlikely that the problem is something I can fix :)
Quick dewey, make it so that some of the parts move.
Now that the housing is unbolted, the parts move around real good. But I don't think that's causing my problem.
what's the wave radio look like inside? those bose things must use faberge eggs as dielectrics or something.
the CD player probably also needs it's head recalibrated (and kyl's not a licensed psychiatrist yet -- HA!), so i figured i'd take it in to a pro for both problems.
It's just one circuit board, two front-facing speakers, and a long, serpentine tube molded into the housing running around the sides and back. I guess this is supposed to provide a longer path for the low-frequency sound waves to get amplified within.
Nothing like these bad boys (caution: pdf).
