zarf has been a mainstay of my scrabble playing for about 15 years, after my brother played it as a random assemblage of letters that were "probably a word". i have not often been more pissed off when finding a word in a dictionary. it also serves to dignify my playing around round 5 or 6, where my entries usually look like ..., "boob", "turd", "zarf".
i have also been on a half-assed campaign during this time to introduce it into ordinary english usage. this campaign usually increases in intensity within a day or two of playing scrabble.
i knew ferrule from trips to the hardware store but not as pencil anatomy.
i've seen #1 listed in other exotic word lists. is there a word for words that only appear in exotic word lists?
Speaking of names of things you never knew had names...
Surfing the wikipedia, I learned the word puggle today.
I never knew it, but it turns out "echidna" doesn't belong in TMBG's song Mammals, because he's an example of their cousin called monotreme. And, as it turns out, dead uncle Allotheria has been renamed Multituberculata.
Everything makes a little more sense when it's anchored.
